This week, New York City is playing host to an international conference on climate change different from any other that has gone before. The people convening it, and those making presentations, are all self-proclaimed “climate skeptics.” And here is the purpose of the conference, in words taken verbatim from the invitation letter sent by the sponsor, the Heartland Institute:

The purpose of the conference is to generate international media attention to the fact that many scientists believe forecasts of rapid warming and catastrophic events are not supported by sound science, and that expensive campaigns to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are not necessary or cost-effective.

In other words, it’s a media event designed to promote a fixed point of view with a negative agenda of opposition.

That, ladies and gentlemen (of the media especially) is not a “skeptical” agenda but a denialist enterprise.

A shocking new energy powder designed and marketed to look like cocaine is set to cause a storm of controversy when it hits the shelves in Britain.

The white substance, which contains caffeine and other stimulants, is called I Love Blow and comes in a box complete with a mirror and fake credit card.

It is already on sale in ordinary grocery shops in the USA where angry parents have sending endless complaints to makers of the product and advertising watchdogs.

In the center of the Australian continent, Uluru, or Ayers Rock, rises 1,142 feet out of the dry plains, providing shade and water to plants and animals. The area’s sparse rainfall trickles down the rock formation and drains out slowly to form little springs where plants can grow. Small amounts of oxidized iron embedded in the sandstone give Uluru its famous shifting color as the sun passes over it. At sunset, the formation appears to glow red. In 1987, the rock along with the surrounding Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park was designated a World Heritage Site.
